Blitz For Six, Draymond & Curry Wear Cupcakes, Sprewell Sits Next To Dolan

FOOTBALL

The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are certainly not sitting on their laurels with an amazing 5 Super Bowl wins. Just days after taking home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the Pats filed a trademark application for the phrase “Blitz for Six”. Got to appreciate their confidence.

BASKETBALL

Golden State Warrior, Kevin Durant knew what he would get some heat Saturday night when he returned to Oklahoma City to play his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder. Not only did Durant put up solid numbers in a decisive 130-114 win, but he and his teammates embraced the taunting. Steph Curry and Draymond Green grabbed a couple of the  “Cupcake” tshirts, distributed at the game and did their postgame interviews proudly wearing them. In case it’s not clear, the “cupcake” reference is supposed to imply Durant is “soft”.

The New York Knicks are trying to deflect their bad press (when they recently ousted Charles Oakley) and attempted to show they appreciate their players, by inviting a number of former Knicks to attend the matchup against the San Antonia Spurs Sunday night. Most notable was former Knick Latrell Sprewell, who sat next to team owner James Dolan. When Sprewell first appeared back at Madison Square Garden in 2003, after his trade to the Timberwolves, he shouted at Dolan resulting in a 25K fine. It’s not clear if inviting the former players Sunday night helped the Knicks image, but at least they had a good night of basketball beating the Spurs 94-90.

Duke’s Grayson Allen On Fire Agst North Carolina, NBA Social Media Rules

BASKETBALL

Grayson Allen 2It’s been an up and down season for the Duke Blue Devils and their controversial star Grayson Allen, but Thursday night’s win over their cross-town rivals, North Carolina, gave the team a much needed boost. Allen has been on fire lately helping the team to win their last 4 games by averaging 21.5 points per game (scored 25 against North Carolina Thursday). To refresh your memory, Allen has been in hot water for tripping three opponents over the course of the season. He was suspended for one game (critics thought it should have been more) and made to give up his leadership role as captain of the team. Duke 86, North Carolina 78.

The NBA needed to remind their players to refrain from social media abuse of other players/teams/officials so as not to diminish the reputation of the League or further heighten misunderstandings. The Deputy Commissioner wrote,”Teams may use social media for fun and lighthearted banter that does not reflect poorly on any team, player, other team or League personnel, or the League as a whole. However, such activity cannot become inappropriate or offensive. As such, we encourage teams to properly and extensively train their social media staff members to ensure that they know what kind of postings are appropriate and what kind are not.” Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone adhered to social media appropriateness!

Charles Oakley Arrested At Knicks Game, Jordan Spieth Rails Agst Autograph “Scums”

BASKETBALL

Charles OakleyDrama keeps surrounding the New York Knicks. On Wednesday night, former Knick, Charles Oakley was arrested for getting into an altercation near team owner James Dolan. According to reports, Oakley also punched three employees from Madison Square Garden. Oakley told the press afterward, “I didn’t say anything to him. I swear on my mother. They came over and wanted to know why I was sitting there. I bought the ticket. I said why do you guys keep staring at me. Then they asked me to leave. And I said I’m not leaving.” Those close to Oakley expressed how upsetting it was to watch Oakley acting up and getting arrested.

GOLF

Jordan Spieth went off on “professional” autograph seekers during his practice round at Pebble Beach. Spieth heard a bunch of men using the ‘F’ word in front of some kids so refused to autograph their loot and called them “scums”. Spieth said he’d always sign autographs for kids and for his loyal fans, but knows when someone is just trying to get an autograph to sell the merchandise online.

LaMelo Ball Scores 92 Points, Jackson Criticizes Melo, Sarkisian To Falcons

BASKETBALL

LaMelo BallThe Ball brothers are all aptly named. Sophomore LaMelo Ball (younger brother to UCLA freshman Lonzo Ball) scored 92 points in his high school game (41 of those points in the 4th quarter) on Tuesday evening. He’s currently a sophomore at Chino Hills High School and has already committed to play at UCLA when he graduates. There’s also middle brother LiAngelo Ball (a Senior at Chino Hills High School), who is also committed to UCLA and who also went on a 72 point scoring streak earlier in the season.

In the NBA, New York Knicks President Phil Jackson took to twitter to criticize his star player Carmelo Anthony. Many are wondering why Jackson is publicly escalating his feud with Anthony. Carmelo has a no-trade clause and claims he wants to stay in New York, but Jackson has “shopped” him around to a few teams. In order to leave, Anthony would need to waive his no-trade clause, so there’s speculation Jackson is trying to get under Carmelo’s skin.

FOOTBALL

Steve Sarkisian is certainly having an exciting year professionally. Six months ago he was an offensive analyst for Alabama. Then before Alabama’s championship game against Clemson, he was promoted to offensive coordinator. And now that the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is taking the reins as head coach of the SF 49ers, Sarkisian will head to the NFL as the new offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.

Brady’s Missing SB Jersey, Shanahan New Head Coach Niners, Best & Worst SB Ads

FOOTBALL

After his historic comeback victory Sunday night in the Super Bowl, Tom Brady is clearly on Cloud 9, although unfortunately his jersey isn’t with him. It’s been reported someone stole the famous jersey after the game, and now the Texas Rangers are working to recover the item. According to Texas’ Lt Governor, “In Texas we place a very high value on hospitality and football.  Tom Brady’s jersey has great historical value and is already being called ‘the most valuable NFL collectable ever.’ It will likely go into the Hall of Fame one day. It is important that history does not record that it was stolen in Texas.”

Atlanta’s offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, didn’t have long to weep over his team’s devastating loss. He’s now officially the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan signed a 6 year contract as did the Niners new general manager, John Lynch.

Melissa McCarthyThere is a good amount of talk about the best and worst Super Bowl ads, with some even saying all the ads were boring and inspiring.  It’s clear everyone has an opinion. So, in case you missed these ads during the game (which is understandable in the 4th Q when the Patriots were on overdrive, and all anyone could think about is the super human Tom Brady), here’s a sampling of the best and worst according to MarketWatch.

Historic Super Bowl Win For New England Patriots!!!

FOOTBALL

Screen Shot 2017-02-06 at 8.54.40 AMSuper Bowl 51 did not disappoint! The game will go down as the greatest comeback of all time and one of the most exciting championship games in history. The New England Patriots overcame a 25 point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime, the first overtime in Super Bowl history. The Falcons led for 41 minutes and 18 seconds while the Patriots never led until James White’s TD in OT. White had the game of his life (and now fans are rushing to buy his jersey) with 14 receptions and 3 TD’s.

At halftime while the rest of us watched Lady Gaga’s sing her heart out in an entertaining and well choreographed show, Patriots’ Safety Duron Harmon reportedly inspired his team by saying  “they were going to pull off the most dramatic comeback in Super Bowl history” and they did! Down 25 points, the Patriots did in fact record the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. The previously largest comeback was a deficit of 10 points.  To no ones surprise Tom Brady was named the Super Bowl MVP, setting yet another record having earned the honors in 2001, 2003 and 2014. This was a game for the ages with multiple records broken.

Screen Shot 2017-02-06 at 8.54.32 AMAfter the game, tears were flowing as Brady hugged coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft.  Brady said, “we’re all going to remember this for the rest of our lives.” When Kraft accepted the Lombardi Trophy he added, “I want to say to our fans, our brilliant coaching staff, our amazing players who were so spectacular, this is unequivocally the sweetest.” Patriots 34, Falcons 28.

Perhaps we all should have known the Patriots would win the Super Bowl when on Saturday night Falcons QB Matt Ryan was announced the NFL MVP. This is the 8th straight time an NFL MVP went on to lose the Super Bowl.

The Falcons finished the season with the 7th highest rated scoring offense in NFL history. This is QB Matt Ryan’s first Super Bowl, but he hasn’t shown any nervous signs throughout the post season. In fact, he hasn’t thrown an interception since December 4th, 2016. Ryan’s favorite target, receiver Julio Jones has also been great in the playoffs, setting a record for multiple playoff games with 150 plus yards and 2 plus TD’s.

The Patriots dynamic duo of QB Tom Brady and Coach Bill Belichick have been here done that a record 6 times, winning 4 of the 6 (this will be their 7th appearance in a Super Bowl together). If the Pats win, Brady will hold the record for most Super Bowl wins by a QB (he’s currently tied with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana).

Steph Curry And Dad Put On Show, Goodell’s Press Conference, Alabama’s #1 Recruiting

BASKETBALL

Steph and Dell CurryStephen Curry put on a show Wednesday night hitting 11-3 pointers and posting 39 points in 3 quarters during the Golden State Warriors win over the Charlotte Hornets. Fans could have predicted the game would be special when Steph passed the ball before the game to his Dad, Dell Curry, who played in the NBA for 16 years and now Charlotte Hornets broadcaster. Dell banked a 3-pointer from the sidelines (while wearing a suit). “It’s always cool, obviously, seeing my Dad on the sidelines, commentating the games on their end,” said Steph Curry, “I don’t take those opportunities for granted. It’s an unbelievable opportunity to play the game that he played for 16 years in the NBA, and carry on that name in the league.” Warriors 126, Hornets 111.

FOOTBALL

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference where he answered questions on Deflategate, returning to the Patriots Gillette Stadium, Raiders and Chargers moves to Vegas and LA and even his opinion of Trump’s immigration policies. On the awkwardness of his relationship with Tom Brady and the Patriots, he said, “We have a job to do. We do our job. As I said, there was a violation. We applied a process and discipline, and we came to a conclusion that was supported by the facts and by the courts. So from our standpoint, we understand the fans who are loyal and passionate for a team object and don’t like the outcome. I totally understand that. That’s not an issue for me.” As for his opinion of Trump, he deflected nicely by saying, “As commissioner of the NFL, I’m singularly focused on the Super Bowl right now.”

As reported, yesterday was National Signing Day and to no one’s surprise, Nick Saban’s Alabama had the #1 recruiting class.

National Signing Day, Carson Palmer Signals Bye Bye Arizona, Oakley Says Barkley Drinks

FOOTBALL

Connor WedingtonFor all college football fans, today is a big day. It’s National signing day and recruited high school prospects from around the country will be sending in (via fax machine which probably seems a bit antiquated to a high school student) their official letters of intent.  Not only is choosing the right school a big deal for the recruited athlete, but the schools know they have to fill in roster spots with players able to start in their first or second year, especially with players leaving early to play in the NFL. Not all players wait until National signing day to announce their intentions, and some players even get creative. One of the best announcements I’ve seen is Sumner’s Connor Wedington (who decommitted from Washington then announced his pick with….no spoiler, watch the video to find out!)

In NFL news, Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer pulled his kids out of school, put his house up for sale and has moved out of the state. Palmer may be signaling he’ll retire. If that’s the case, the Cards need to find a QB ready to play. Many are speculating Dallas QB Tony Romo may be a good fit, but that could be tough call for the Cowboys as the Cards are NFC rivals.

BASKETBALL

As suspected, the drama between Charles Barkley and LeBron James hasn’t gone away. Former NBA All Star Charles Oakley, who has a history with Barkley, added fuel to the fire when he tweeted, “I love everything LeBron James said about the hater he needs to stop drinking at work. TNT can I stop by and get a drink?” LeBron’s buddy, Chicago Bulls Guard, Dwayne Wade even got into the action criticizing Barkley, “We all have flaws. But when your flaws are a little bit more, you should shut up.”
