Big Papi’s Final Game, Red Sox Eliminated, Giants Rally Agst Cubs, Winston’s Pep Talk To Kicker

BASEBALL

david-ortizIt was an anti-climatic final game for David Ortiz (known as Big Papi to all of his fans).  One of the best clutch hitters of all time, Ortiz played his final game Monday night when the Red Sox were swept in the ALDS by the Cleveland Indians. In an emotional farewell after the game, Ortiz credited the Boston fans for inspiring him. He said, “That’s why I got better, that’s why I got the opportunity to have the career that I had.” The Indians now head to Toronto to face the Blue Jays in the ALCS.

In the National League Division Series, the San Francisco Giants rallied to grab a must-win game (or face elimination) against the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are now up 2-1 in the best-of-5 series so Tuesday night’s matchup is also do or die for the Giants. In 2012 the Giants came back from 0-2 against the Cincinnati Reds to win the NLDS and went on to win the World Series, so don’t count them out just yet.

FOOTBALL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston gave his rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo a pep talk after he missed his first two field goal attempts on national TV Monday night against the Carolina Panthers. Winston told him, “Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time situations.” That’s all it took as Aguayo kicked the winning field goal to give the Bucs a 17-14 win over the Cam Newton– less Panthers.
