Pats Grab Bennett From Bears, Obama Chooses Kansas To Win March Madness

NFL

The New England Patriots traded a fourth round draft pick for Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett. The Patriots currently have the number one tight end in the league with Rob Gronkowski, but they like running multiple tight end formations. Bennett has been a troublesome member of the Bears for some time. After the Bears failed to extend his contract before the 2015 season, Bennett boycotted most of the offseason program. Throughout the season, Bennett spoke openly to media about his discontent with his role in the offense.

LaGarett BlountDespite Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick’s no-nonsense approach, the team seems to have no problem hiring players with a chip on their shoulder. For example, in 2014, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut LaGarette Blount after he walked out of the stadium mid-game, frustrated by his lack of playing time behind superstar Le’Veon Bell. The Patriots, Blount’s former team, snatched him up right away. Despite the decidedly unprofessional move, Blount storming out turned out to be his best career move. That year he started as the number one running back for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. The Pats hope Bennett will find similar luck with his new team.

NCAA

President Barrack Obama has filled out his March Madness bracket. An avid college football fan, the President publicly predicted his picks for winner every year since taking office. “I have a tendency to pick the coach as much as anything,” Obama said. This year, he chose Kansas to win the NCAA championship. Obama hasn’t picked a correct winner since his first year in office, when he correctly guessed that North Carolina would win the bracket.

CJ Anderson Staying With Denver, Von Miller’s DWTS

NFL

Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson will be sticking with the reigning Super Bowl champions. After being on the market as a restricted-free agent, Anderson accepted an offer from the Miami Dolphins. Then, somewhat unexpectedly, the Broncos announced that they would match Miami’s offer and retain the running back. Chicago actually offered Anderson more money, according to the player, but he felt more confident in his own success within Miami’s system. When Anderson heard the news that the Broncos were matching Miami’s offer, after failing to offer him a sizable contract in negotiations earlier in the year, Anderson remarked that he initially felt “disrespected.” But Bronco’s GM John Elway has no regrets. “We found out what his market value is,” Elway said.

Von MillerIn other NFL news, Super Bowl MVP Von Miller will appear on the new season of Dancing with the Stars. His twitter/instagram feeds features some great dancing moves with his partner Whitney Carson. Carson is serious about the season and is even fining Von Miller $100 every minute he’s late for practice. Season begins on Monday March 21st.

NFL Acknowledges Football Can Lead To Brain Injury, Bryant Suspended By Steelers

NFL

NFLFor the first time ever, a senior official from the National Football League has publicly acknowledged football can lead to long-term brain injury, particularly CTE, which stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Jeff Miller, NFL’s senior vice president for health and safety, appeared at a round table on concussions held by the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce. Miller was asked if there was a link between football and neurodegenerative diseases like CTE. “The answer to that is certainly yes,” Miller said,  referencing research that shows 90 of the 94 brains studied from deceased NFL players showed long-term brain damage. Miller’s admission is a big deal, as it was just a month ago that a neurosurgeon heading an NFL subcommittee on long-term brain injury denied a link between the sport and CTE.

Steelers Wide Receiver Martavis Bryant has been handed a suspension that will last at least one year for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bryant was suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season after testing positive for marijuana. The Steelers General Manager says the team is “very disappointed” in Bryant, saying the 24 year old “is at a crossroads in his professional life, and he needs to understand significant changes need to occur in his personal life if he wants to regain his career as a Pittsburgh Steeler.” As bad as the news is for the the Steelers, the team was not unprepared for this. They signed Darrius Heyward-Bey to a three year extension in anticipation of Bryant’s possible suspension and also signed former San Diego Charger tight end Ladarius Green.

Knicks Beat Lakers In Last Second 3, Clippers Suffering W/O Blake, NCAA Brackets Revealed Early On Twitter

NBA

The New York Knicks pulled ahead in the final second of a close game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Knicks point guard Jose Calderon made his only three-pointer of the game when it mattered most—with two-eighths of a second left on the clock. The loss sets the Lakers back to a 14-53 win-loss record. Knicks 90, Lakers 87.

Blake GriffinThe Los Angeles Clippers are suffering, and star Blake Griffin’s absence is becoming more pronounced every game. Griffin has been out since December after a serious ankle injury in December. His quad is still bothering him, as is the hand he broke in January after getting into an altercation with a member of the clippers staff. The Clippers endured a painful loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers over the weekend. LeBron James scored 27 points in a game the Cavs won by 24 points. Cavaliers, 114, Clippers 90

NCAA

March Madness is about to get underway. The NCAA revealed the 2016 tournament bracket on Sunday. One big surprise was a #1 seed going to the Oregon Ducks over Michigan State. The other #1 seeds went to North Carolina, Virginia and, in the top overall spot, the Kansas Jayhawks.

The bracket is revealed during a telecast every year, similar to an awards ceremony. But this year, the full bracket was leaked on Twitter a fourth of the way through the broadcast. Imagine the Best Picture being leaked in the middle of the Oscars. The NCAA was understandably upset. “We take this matter seriously and are looking into it,” the organization said in a statement. The tournament officially begins this Tuesday.

Kobe and Lebron’s Final Matchup, NBA’s Nate Robinson Attempting NFL Career

NBA

Kobe and LebronKobe Bryant’s farewell played out another chapter Thursday night when the LA Lakers played the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kobe and Lebron James faced off against each other for the 22nd time of their careers. Both had double digit points (26 for Kobe and 24 for Lebron) but the Cavaliers came out with the win and the crowd went crazy seeing these superstars hug it out. Cavs 120, Lakers 108.

Nate Robison is attempting an amazing feat! As a current free agent in the NBA, he is using his “downtime” to try out for the NFL. Nate used to play football at the University of Washington but hasn’t taken the field in over 11 years. At 31 years old, the NBA point guard could be the first athlete in history to play for an NBA and NFL team. We’ve seen football and baseball (Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders) and basketball and baseball (Michael Jordan) but never basketball and football. Good luck Nate!

Spurs Wife Takes Reigns, Free Agency Moves In NFL

NBA

San Antonio Spurs CEO, Chairman and Owner Peter Holt announced his retirement on Wednesday.  His wife, Julianna Hawn Holt will take the reigns as CEO and chairman of the team. “Our ownership in the Spurs has always been a family affair,” Julianna Holt said in a statement. “We felt this was the right time to make this transition. We are very excited about the current Spurs season and the future of the organization.” It’s certainly a good time to be CEO of the team. The Spurs have the second best record in the league with 54 wins and 10 losses. This year will mark their 19th consecutive playoff appearance.

NFL

Brock Osweiler 2Free agency began on Wednesday, and there have already been some big moves. Despite Peyton Manning’s retirement earlier this week, the Denver Broncos failed to reach an agreement with #2 Quarterback Brock Osweiler. The Houston Texans snatched him up, signing him to a four-year deal worth $72 million. Denver will have to look to free agency or the upcoming draft to find a quarterback worthy of leading the Super Bowl champions next season. Houston struggled at Quarterback last year, oscillating between Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallet and Brandon Weeden, none of whom could get anything going for the team. In addition to picking up Osweiler, the Texans also signed Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller and Chiefs guard Jeff Allen.

The game of free agency musical chairs didn’t stop there. Nearly every team in the league, save the notoriously homegrown, draft-dependent Green Bay Packers, made substantial moves, signing free agents or locking down their existing players. The New York Jets picked up veteran Bears running back Matt Forte. Just days after Calvin Johnson’s retirement became official, the Detroit Lions signed Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones. The Ravens took New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson, and the Saints in turn took Indianapolis Colts tight end Coby Fleener.

Free agency has just begun, but the landscape for the 2016 NFL season is already looking very, very different than what we expected. One big question on everyone’s mind is where former Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will end up, with many speculating the Broncos could sign him to lead the team, or just as likely, warm the bench as a solid backup.

Megatron Retires, Chancellor And Seattle Gym

NFL

Calvin JohnsonDetroit Lions’ wide receiver, Calvin Johnson aka “Megatron” announced he is retiring from the NFL. At 30 years old, Johnson is considered one of the most talented wide receivers to have played the game. In a statement to the press announcing his retirement, he expressed his respect for the Lions but also his regret in not bringing them a championship. “To the fans of Detroit and Michigan. I so appreciated your passionate support over the years and truly enjoyed playing for you. I loved playing in Detroit and will forever be a Lion. My biggest regret is that I wasn’t able to help give our fans a championship.” Johnson holds almost every franchise record for the Lions but has been playing through numerous injuries the last few seasons and after 9 years in the League, felt it was time to retire. He will be missed!

In other football news, Seattle Seahawks Strong Safety Kam Chancellor told ESPN about a recent embarrassing incident at a Seattle gym. Kam and some friends stopped at a closed gym to inquire about buying the establishment for a series of women’s boot camp classes An employee of the gym called 911 and Kam and friends were stopped by the police a few blocks from the facility. Kam complained to ESPN that he felt racially profiled. No arrests were made. He said, “The look on her face was disgust. It was a disgusting look like she had seen something that was nasty, something that stunk or something.”

Warriors Win 45th Home Game, Cavs Lose To Grizzlies, DeMarco Murray To Titans, Erin Andrews Awarded $55 Mill

NBA

The Golden State Warriors followed up their historic loss to the Lakers with a record-breaking win against the Orlando Magic. The win is their 45th consecutive home win. The previous record was 44, held by—you guessed it—the ’96 Chicago Bulls. The game was a close one, with the Warriors overcoming 24 turnovers, thanks in no small part to Steph Curry, who had an incredible night. He scored 41 points, including his 300th 3-pointer for the season, yet another NBA record for the reigning MVP. Warriors 119, Magic 113

The Memphis Grizzlies prevailed against the Cleveland Cavaliers in what should have been a blowout going the other way. Cleveland had Sunday off, all their top players in rotation, and home court advantage. The Grizzlies, on the other hand, spent Sunday losing to the Phoenix Suns, one of the worst teams in the NBA, missing four of their top players, and playing on the road with only 8 players in uniform. But they seemed to have little trouble overcoming the Cavaliers. After the game, LeBron James lamented, “I can sit up here and say that we’re a team that’s ready to start the playoffs tomorrow, but we’re not… We still have things happen on the court that just… shouldn’t happen.” I’m sure the Cleveland fans in attendance would agree. Grizzlies 106, Cavaliers 103

NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles are doing everything they can to forget about former head coach Chip Kelly. They have agreed to trade running back DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans. Murray, along with several other players they’ve traded since Kelly’s firing, were acquisitions of the head coach during his two year stint with the Eagles. Murray had a blockbuster year with the Dallas Cowboys before being traded to Philadelphia in 2015, where he floundered. On multiple occasions, the running back expressed concern that he wasn’t properly utilized. He personally picked the Titans as his destination-of-choice. The Titans have a chance to have a renaissance in the coming years. They have a new coach, eight draft picks, including the No. 1 pick, and now, a very talented veteran running back. Either way, they can’t do much worse than their 2015 season. The team won just three games.

OTHER

Erin AndrewsESPN Sportscaster Erin Andrews was awarded $55 million dollars in her court case against a stalker and the management company of a Nashville Marriott hotel. In 2008, a creepy man asked for a room next to Andrews and filmed her through a peephole he made to her room. He then posted a nude video of her online.

Peyton Manning Announces Retirement, Randle Arrested, Mason Tasered, Warriors Lose, Lebron Tight With Kendrick Lamar

NFL

Peyton ManningPeyton Manning is retiring from the NFL after 18 seasons and two Super Bowl victories. Manning will make his announcement on Monday, exactly one month after the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50. The sports world has speculated on Manning’s possible retirement since the season began. He spent some time on the bench this year with an injury, but returned in time to lead his team through the playoffs and to his second Super Bowl victory. Manning is the NFL’s only 5-time MVP and holds the records for most passing yards and touchdowns.

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle was arrested for the sixth time in the last year for failing to appear in court earlySunday morning. Randle has previously been arrested for battery, property damage, drug possession, shoplifting and domestic violence. Meanwhile, in Florida, LA Rams running back Tre Mason was tasered and cuffed for resisting arrest after a police officer pulled him over for speeding. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, reckless driving, failing to register a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

NBA

The Golden State Warriors had the rug pulled out from under them on Sunday. No one expected the 13-51 Lakers to beat the 55-6 Warriors, but that’s exactly what happened. The game was one of the biggest upsets in NBA history. While all the talk this season revolved around the Golden State Warriors chasing the ’96 Chicago Bull’s record 72 wins, this loss left them with the San Antonio Spurs fast on their heels. While the Warriors and Splash brothers have been soaking up all the attention, the Spurs have been working under the radar to have one of their best seasons ever. Lakers 112, Warriors 95

Being a Superstar has plenty of benefits, as LeBron James knows all too well. James took to Twitter a week ago to ask rapper Kendrick Lamar to release a stash of songs he had been stockpiling. Less than a week later, Lamar released a surprise album. James and Lamar are “really close,” according to the basketball superstar. “You’re welcome,” he told reporters.
