Spurs Wife Takes Reigns, Free Agency Moves In NFL

San Antonio Spurs CEO, Chairman and Owner Peter Holt announced his retirement on Wednesday. His wife, Julianna Hawn Holt will take the reigns as CEO and chairman of the team. “Our ownership in the Spurs has always been a family affair,†Julianna Holt said in a statement. “We felt this was the right time to make this transition. We are very excited about the current Spurs season and the future of the organization.†It’s certainly a good time to be CEO of the team. The Spurs have the second best record in the league with 54 wins and 10 losses. This year will mark their 19th consecutive playoff appearance.

Free agency began on Wednesday, and there have already been some big moves. Despite Peyton Manning’s retirement earlier this week, the Denver Broncos failed to reach an agreement with #2 Quarterback Brock Osweiler. The Houston Texans snatched him up, signing him to a four-year deal worth $72 million. Denver will have to look to free agency or the upcoming draft to find a quarterback worthy of leading the Super Bowl champions next season. Houston struggled at Quarterback last year, oscillating between Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallet and Brandon Weeden, none of whom could get anything going for the team. In addition to picking up Osweiler, the Texans also signed Miami Dolphins running back Lamar Miller and Chiefs guard Jeff Allen.
The game of free agency musical chairs didn’t stop there. Nearly every team in the league, save the notoriously homegrown, draft-dependent Green Bay Packers, made substantial moves, signing free agents or locking down their existing players. The New York Jets picked up veteran Bears running back Matt Forte. Just days after Calvin Johnson’s retirement became official, the Detroit Lions signed Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones. The Ravens took New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson, and the Saints in turn took Indianapolis Colts tight end Coby Fleener.
Free agency has just begun, but the landscape for the 2016 NFL season is already looking very, very different than what we expected. One big question on everyone’s mind is where former Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will end up, with many speculating the Broncos could sign him to lead the team, or just as likely, warm the bench as a solid backup.
