Playoff Teams Set College Championship, Pats Lose, Panthers Still Unbeaten, Warriors Streak Continues

FOOTBALL

Over the weekend, the college football selection committee designated the final four teams for the College Football Championship on New Years Eve. Clemson vs. Oklahoma and Alabama vs. Michigan State will compete to play in the Championship game on January 11th. In only the second year of the College football playoff system, there seems to be general consensus that these four teams were the most deserving based on the strength of their schedule and games won.

In a major upset this weekend, the mighty New York Patriots fell for the second week in a row. The Philadelphia Eagles came from a 14 point deficit to score 35 points and a big win. Eagles 35, Eagles 28.

The Carolina Panthers continued their perfect streak with another win in a high scoring game against the New Orleans Saints. The game was sloppy but Panther’s QB Cam Newton rose to the occasion by throwing for 331 yards and 5 TD’s. Panthers 41, Saints 38.

BASKETBALL

WarriorsSpeaking of perfect streaks, the mesmerizing Golden State Warriors continue to win. They recorded their 21st and 22nd straight win this weekend. On Sunday night against the Brooklyn Nets, Steph Curry had a slow start and the Warriors fell behind in the beginning of the 3rd quarter, but in typical Warriors’ fashion,  Steph Curry and the Team went on a roll. Curry scored 16 of his 28 points in the 3rd quarter energizing the team to a dominating finish. In explaining his resurgence, Curry said, “Just trying to see if I could get some room and figure out a way to impact the game, and things started to click.” And click they did with a solid finish. Warriors 114, Nets 98.

Hail Mary Saves Packers, Coldplay To Perform At Super Bowl

FOOTBALL

A desperation Hail Mary saved the day for the Packers! The Green Bay Packers scored on a 61-yard Hail Mary brought down by Richard Rodgers to beat the Detroit Lions.  It was the longest Hail Mary in NFL history. The game deciding play was set up by a facemask penalty on Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. Devin Taylor was flagged for the penalty but insists (and replays seem to confirm) that it should not have been a violation. It was an exciting end to a game  and kept the Packers in the playoff hunt. Packers 27, Lions 23.

Coldplay 2In other NFL news, the League announced that Coldplay will perform at Halftime at the Super Bowl. Fans reactions on twitter were not too positive. They felt that Colplay was too boring and too British to perform at America’s greatest sporting event.

Curry Stuns Crowd With 28 Points In 3rd Q During Dell Curry Night, Rio’s Waters Contaminated, Saban References Coke Bottle

BASKETBALL

Steph & Dell Curry 2The Charlotte Hornets hosted a celebration of Steph Curry’s Dad, Dell Curry, on Wednesday night. The celebration continued all night as Steph dominated the boards with a stunning 28 points in just the 3rd quarter. Steph scored 40 points overall in a all-Curry evening that no doubt made his Dad proud (even though Dell’s Hornets lost). The Golden State Warriors continue their insane winning streak. Warriors 111, Hornets 99.

OLYMPICS

The Associated Press reported that the levels of contamination caused by human sewage in the waters in Rio are 1.7 million times higher than acceptable levels in the U.S. Many athletes who competed in Brazil over the summer in pre-Olympic rowing and sailing events fell ill due to exposure to the water. Rio won the bid to host the Olympics on a promise that they’d improve sewage sanitation. The promise was clearly not fulfilled and people are up in arms that athletes will have to compete in the unhealthy environment.

FOOTBALL

Nick Saban went off on reporters during a press conference when asked about his defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart, heading to Georgia as their new head coach. It was an awkward exchange where Saban referred to a coke bottle and claimed that reporters were making things up.“You all speculate and create things, and then you want people to respond to it. Get this bottle to respond to it because I don’t know anything more than that. I told you everything I know, so you can ask the bottle, but don’t ask me.”

Sixers Win First Game, Georgia Fires Richt, Bama’s Smart Takes Over, Manziel Question

BASKETBALL

76ersAfter Kobe announced his retirement on Sunday, the NBA is gearing up for the Kobe Bryant farewell tour. Prices at Staples Center in LA are going through the roof as everyone wants to see Kobe play one last time.  Right now, however, Kobe is on the road. His first stop was in Philly, where it all started.  Kobe went to school at Lower Merion High School where he won a state championship.  Both the Sixers and the Lakers are having horrible seasons but the Sixers managed to pull themselves together to pick up their first win.   Philadelphia 103, LA Lakers 91.

FOOTBALL

In college football, after Georgia parted ways with their longtime coach Mark Richt, they settled on Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.  Smart is clearly a winner at Alabama, and the Bulldogs are hoping that Smart will be a strong recruiter and help the Georgia program become part of the National Playoff picture.  Success might take a few years, but the Bulldogs believe in Smart’s resume (3 National Championships at ‘Bama), and are betting he brings them back to prominence.  All is not over for Richt as he has already been contacted by many schools to join their program and some are even trying to recruit Richt to be the next Governor of Georgia.
The Cleveland Browns lost their starting quarterback Josh McCown for the season and are looking for answers at quarterback.  Their coach, Mike Pettine is silent on who will play, but many want to see Manziel again.  Manziel, however, has been relegated to the 3rd string QB, and Austin Davis is next in line.  On the other hand, playing Manziel could be a chance for the Browns to see if he has what it takes to get better or if they should cut him next year.

Ravens’ Lucky win, Golden State Still Hot, Okafor Has Security Guard

FOOTBALL

The NFL Monday Night Football matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns seemed as if it would be unexciting.  The Ravens lost their starting Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Flacco last week to a season-ending injury, and the Browns, well, the Browns are just looking for answers.  The game was actually pretty entertaining. The Browns were close to winning by a field goal, but, in miraculous Browns’ fashion, the kick was BLOCKED by a Ravens’ rookie, and the Ravens ran for a touchdown!  Incredibly good luck for the Ravens, and incredibly bad luck for the Browns.  Baltimore 33, Cleveland 27.

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors are still red hot, but teams are kicking  into high gear when they play them. Every team wants to be the one to take down Goliath.  On Monday night, the Utah Jazz actually got close to toppling Steph Curry & Co.   But, the Warriors stayed strong and held on for the win, bringing their record to an incredible 19-0.  The current record is 33 wins in a row.  This team is certainly fun to watch. Good luck Golden State!  Golden State 106, Utah 103.

Jahlil Okafor 2In the NBA, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding Philadelphia 76ers rookie Jahlil Okafor.  Okafor got in trouble for getting into a fight outside of a Boston bar, and was also pulled over for driving 90mph over a bridge.  The Sixers want to protect their investment, and Okafor is concerned for his safety so from now on, Okafor will be traveling with a security guard.  With some extra protection,  the hope is Okafor will stay out of trouble.

Kobe’s Dear Basketball Retirement Letter, Seahawks Win, Gronk Down And Pats Defeated

BASKETBALL

Kobe Bryant 2The big news out of the sports world is Kobe Bryant’s announcement he will retire from the NBA.  Kobe put a posting on the Internet titled “Dear Basketball” in which he told the world “This season is all I have left to give. My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind but my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.”  Kobe had a unique career and will go down as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. The game will miss him.

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers are both trying their hardest to shake off a bad start to the season and secure a playoff spot.  The Steelers headed to Seattle this weekend and in the midst of the battle, the Seahawks lost tight end Jimmy Graham to a season-ending injury.  Oddly enough, once he went out, the Seahawks played better, and even though it was a scoring feast from both teams, the Seahawks came away with the victory.   Seattle 39, Pittsburgh 30.

In prime time, the Denver Broncos hosted the unbeaten New England Patriots.  Even though the Pats entered the game undefeated, they team is completely banged up and it seems like every week they lose one of their stars.  They first lost Dion Lewis, then Julian Edelman, and now… Rob Gronkowski.  In the 4th quarter, Gronk went down and had to be carted off the field.  We don’t know the seriousness of the injury yet, but it didn’t look good.  The Broncos were behind most of the game, but they surged back for a late lead.  Not surprisingly, the Pats tied the score to send the game into overtime.  The Broncos, led by QB Brock Osweiler battled the weather and got the ball to back-up running back CJ Anderson who scored the game winning touchdown.  The Pats are no longer undefeated.  Denver 30, New England 24.

Saturday Kids Korner, By My Son Lucas Korn

Basketball

In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers are going in two opposite directions. The warriors are at a record breaking start of 17-0 while the 76ers are not doing so well at a 0-17 start.

Football

Last year’s winner was Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon. It will be a blast finding out who will win.

Also in the NFL, the Patriots and Panthers are still undefeated.

Lions Embarrass Eagles, Romo Injured Again In Loss To Panthers, Packers Retire Favre Jersey While Team Falls To Bears

FOOTBALL

In the first matchup on Thanksgiving Day, the Detroit Lions, with 3 TD’s from superstar wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, ran all over the Philadelphia Eagles.  Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford tied for his personal best by throwing for 5 scoring passes. The Eagles didn’t know what hit them. Lions 45, Eagles 14.

The second game, featured Panthers’ QB Cam Newton continuing to do what he does best, win. The unbeaten Carolina Panthers capitalized on the 3 interceptions returned for TD’s from Dallas QB Tony Romo. Romo may be out for good this season with the same injury (left collarbone) that sidelined him earlier in the year. With the win, the Panthers continue their perfect 11-0 season. Panthers 33, Cowboys 14.

Brett Favre & Bart Starr 2In a moving tribute at halftime Thursday evening during the the Chicago Bears-Green Bay game, the Packers unveiled Brett Favre’s name and jersey number next to the retired names and numbers of other Packers’ greats. Favre spoke about his love for the game and love for his teammates while former Packer great Bart Starr came out to the field to give him a celebratory hug. That emotional display was the highlight for the fans at Lambeau Field as the Packers failed to hold off the Bears. Chicago 17, Packers 13.

Warriors Best Start In NBA History, Manziel Demoted, Top 4 College Teams, Awesome Donuts To Wisconsin Police

BASKETBALL

The Golden State Warriors are certainly golden as have now secured their place in history as the team with the best start to an NBA season. With their route of the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, they posted their 16th straight win for the season eclipsing the previous record held by the 1993 Houston Rockets and the 1948 Washington Capitols. Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr has been absent from the sidelines due to complications from spinal surgery but has still been a major presence for the team. He spoke to the players prior to the game and reminded them of their four core values:  joy, mindfulness, compassion, and competition. When the players have fun, they’re exhibiting joy, when they think through plays, they are mindful, when they get along and conduct themselves properly, they are compassionate and when they get on the court to win, they are competitive.  How do you not love this team?

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, the Cleveland Browns were on a bye last week, and one would assume that their starting quarterback Johnny Manziel would take the time to rest, recover, and study the playbook.  Unfortunately that wasn’t the case, as video emerged of Johnny Manziel partying in Texas.  In the video, he was holding a bottle of champagne, appeared to be drunk, and was singing into the camera.  The Browns were not so happy with this type of behavior and proclaimed that Manziel was not fit or responsible enough to be their starter.  They relinquished Manziel of his starting quarterback duties and demoted him to 3rd string QB.  This fall from grace for Manziel might be a sign that he won’t be back in a Browns uniform next season.

The new top 4 playoff rankings were released in college football. With some upsets and unimpressive wins this past weekend, there were a few shockers.  Notre Dame and Ohio State fell out of the top 4, while Oklahoma and Iowa jumped in. At this point in the season, it’s Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa rounding out the bracket.  There is still controversy, however, as Oklahoma lost to a very weak Texas team, while Iowa hasn’t played any impressive teams yet.  It’s likely that the top 4 will change again at least once before the playoffs are set.
donuts2 2Finally, in a humorous story out of Wisconsin, a fan has sent 20 dozen coconut donuts to the police that ejected him from the game on Saturday.   A fan traveled from Los Angeles to see Wisconsin play.  When he tried to enter a section that was not what his ticket indicated, he was surrounded by police with 5.56 ammo and ejected from the stadium.  The fan claims he misread the ticket and the whole incident was a misunderstanding.  As a gesture of his feelings, he sent the cops 20 dozen coconut donuts. He said, “This was meant as a harmless way to show both my general gratitude for what you do (which is awesome), but slight disdain for my treatment Saturday (which was not so awesome). Donuts are awesome, but coconut donuts are not so awesome.  The Wisconsin police department had a good sense of humor and called the shipment “brilliant”.

Pats Still Undefeated, Brock Osweiler Will Lead Broncos, Les Miles Era May Be Over

FOOTBALL

In Monday Night Football between the Buffalo Bills and the New England Patriots, the Bills armed with a stronger defense, had hopes of upsetting the Patriots.  They did, in fact, come close and even had a chance to win toward the end, but couldn’t pull it together.  The banged up Pats eeked out a victory, and are now 10-0.  New England 20, Buffalo 13.

Robert Pattinson 2   Elsewhere in the NFL, after QB Brock Osweiler (who looks a bit like actor Robert Pattinson) took the Denver Broncos into a blisteringly cold Chicago and grabbed a win this past weekend, the Broncos are handing him the keys to the castle.  Yep, Osweiler has been named the starting quarterback when they face the Patriots next week.  The Broncos are hinting that the Peyton Manning era might be over, and we’ll be seeing an Osweiler led team.  Osweiler trained behind Manning for 3 full seasons which is the same situation as when Aaron Rodgers backed up legend Brett Favre in Green Bay.  Peyton Manning said he intends to play in 2016, but he may not be playing in a Broncos’ uniform.

In college football, sources are saying there is a very good chance that LSU and head coach Les Miles may split ways at the end of the season.  When you’re coaching for a big SEC program like LSU or Alabama, and they don’t win a national championship, the season is considered a failure.   Miles has kept LSU relevant for quite a while, but the fans and the LSU brass are tired of seeing Alabama hoisting up the trophy year after year.  LSU is also on a 3-game losing streak which is making the situation worse   If LSU does fire Miles, they will need a superstar backup as Miles is known for his strong recruiting.
