WATERCOOLER CHAT: SPURS WIN GAME 1, TIMBERWOLVES OWNER TO COACH, CALIPARI TO STAY WILDCAT

BASKETBALL

Lebron JamesIn the NBA, it was Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs.  LeBron was going for 3 championships, and Tim Duncan/Gregg Popovich were going for 5.  This one started out all Heat.  Then the Spurs pulled ahead at the half.  However, there was a big problem in the building, as the air conditioning broke.  So the arena was hot, muggy, and over 90 degrees.  Sure, it affected both teams, so it was still fair, but it’s still brutal conditions to play in.  Unfortunately for the Heat, they were hurt more, as LeBron James suffered some serious cramping with just over 5 minutes to play.  And when he went out of the game, the Spurs pulled away to win Game 1.  San Antonio 110, Miami 95.

Elsewhere in the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves were looking to turn things around next season, but they were still without a coach.  So their part-time owner, Flip Saunders, stepped up yesterday and said that he would coach the team.  Saunders was the T-Wolves coach during their glory days with Kevin Garnett.  With him taking the reigns, the T-Wolves are hoping that he can revive some of the spirit in Minnesota.  They Wolves are going to need it, as they will likely lose their star Kevin Love this off-season.

John CalipariFinally, in college basketball, people thought that Kentucky coach John Calipari might be bolting for the NBA, especially if he were offered a good position like skipper of the Los Angeles Lakers.  However, it doesn’t look like that will pan out, so he will be sticking with Kentucky.  And Kentucky is made this a very easy decision for Calipari, offering him a 7-year $52.5 million contract.  With this type of money, they will of course expect the best recruiting and expect the Wildcats to be in the Final Four year-after-year.
