WATERCOOLER CHAT: CLEMSON LOOKS SOLID AND WINSTON LIGHTS UP LABOR DAY, TEBOW CUT BY PATS

FOOTBALL

It was an exciting Labor Day Weekend in the sports world, as football was finally back.  College football that is.  The college football season usually starts with one big marquee match-up between two Top 10 teams.  And this is a big deal because if you lose, you are greatly reducing your chances of making the BCS National Championship Game.  This year it was #5 Georgia v. #8 Clemson.  Clemson has a creative, explosive offense, but they can’t seem to win the big, important games; let alone against an SEC powerhouse like Georgia.   This was a very close, exciting game, but in the end, Tajh Boyd and the Clemson offense got the job done and edged the Bulldogs.  Clemson has their eyes on winning big this year, and this is just the beginning.  Clemson 38, Georgia 35.

And since there is no NFL just yet, that gave us an opportunity for some Monday Night College Football.  This year’s opening Monday Night Game:  Florida State v. Pitt.  And Florida State was boasting it’s new freshman sensation QB Jameis Winston.  Would Winston come through and live up to all the hype coming out of High School, or would he show his inexperience at the college level?  The answer is that Winston completely exceeded expectations, and led the Seminoles to a big win over Pitt.  He threw for 4 touchdowns, and rushed in another.  It looks like Florida State has a big sensation on their hands.  Florida State 41, Pitt 13.

Finally, in some relatively sad news out of the NFL, the New England Patriots have made their final roster cuts of the pre-season, and the beloved Tim Tebow just didn’t make it.  Ever since leading the Broncos to that magical season in 2011, Tim Tebow has been pretty much kicked out of the league.  Every football expert says he can’t play at this level, and the media-happy Jets were certainly the wrong place for Tebow to try to adjust to the NFL.  The Pats gave him a chance at QB, but he just couldn’t hack it there.  Tebow said he is still going to try to achieve his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL, but a lot of people think that Tebow should head to Canada, where he could potentially be a star.  Then again, Jacksonville could certainly use a QB, and Tebow is pretty much a king down there.  Maybe they should consider each other.
