WATERCOOLER CHAT: MORE HOCKEY GAMES CANCELLED, MAVERICKS FEEL THE HEAT, OKC WIN STREAK SNAPPED

HOCKEY

In the world of hockey…oh wait there is no hockey. The National Hockey League announced Thursday that more games would be cancelled this season. All games through January 14 have now been thrown away. So far, more than 50 percent of the season has been cancelled which is more than 600 games. League and player representatives have not met face-to-face since December 13. During that meeting, just over a week ago, despite mediators coming to the table, a deal was unable to be put in place.

BASKETBALL

In the NBA, the Miami Heat made quick work of the Dallas Mavericks. Without the injured Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks started slow and never could pick up their game to make it competitive. Miami’s Lebron James led all scorers with 24 points and added nine rebounds with five assists. Dwayne Wade added 19 of his own points to the Heat’s total, which left Miami with a 36 point lead late in the game, where neither superstar played in the 4th quarter. Dallas shot under 40 percent from the field and was a lousy 3 -22 from 3 point range in the 110 – 95 blowout.

Also in the basketball world, the Minnesota Timberwolves topped the Oklahoma City Thunder in Minneapolis 99 – 93. The win snapped Oklahoma City’s 12 game winning streak, in which they have run over their opponents. Durant was solid in the loss with 33 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and while Russell Westbrook himself had 30 points, he managed to miss 19 shots in the game. Minnesota’s Kevin Love finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in a game that sent a message to the Thunder saying the Timberwolves are for real. J.J. Barea added 18 of his own points, coming off the bench
