WATERCOOLER CHAT: REDSKINS PLAY SMART OVER GIANTS, A-ROD UNDERGOES SURGERY, HEISMAN TROPHY FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

FOOTBALL

In the NFL, it was Monday Night Football between the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins.  The Giants have looked discombobulated as of late, while the Redskins had won two straight headed into the game — both against NFC East opponents.  They were looking for a three in a row, but it wouldn’t be easy, remember, the Redskins have a brand new shiny weapon in Robert Griffin III.  With him, you can never count the Redskins out.  Griffin didn’t have a big statistical night, but he did play smart football and helped lead the Redskins to a one point victory over the Giants.  Now, the Redskins are at 6-6 and trying to make a run at the playoffs.  If they get in, there’s no telling how far they can go?  Washington 17, NY Giants 16.

BASEBALL

Coming off a putrid performance in the baseball playoffs, Alex Rodriguez wasn’t exactly the apple of New York’s eye.  He played so bad versus the Tigers, that manager Joe Girardi had to bench him.  Now, it looks like the Yankees won’t have to see A-Rod for a couple of months, as A-Rod has decided to undergo necessary hip surgery.  Doctors said that this type of recovery will take Rodriguez at least 4-6 months.  That would put him back with the Yankees mid-season, and who knows, they might not even need him at that point.

FOOTBALL

Finally, the finalists for the Heisman Trophy were announced yesterday, and this year, there are only three.  Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M, known as Johnny Football.  Manziel turned the Aggies inaugural year in the SEC into a grand success, beating Alabama on their home field.  This guy came out of nowhere as a freshman and made it count.  Next up, it’s Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein.  This senior led the Wildcats all the way to the #1 seed in the nation, and put up touchdown after touchdown.   Finally, it’s Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o.  The Irish weren’t even ranked headed into the season, and because of the dominant defensive play from Manti, the Notre Dame Irish are currently at #1 and will go for the National Championship in a month.  It’s tough to determine who will take home the award.
