WATERCOOLER CHAT: PHILLIES BIG WINNERS IN FRE AGENCY, MLB TRADE DEADLINE

FOOTBALL

As the craziness of NFL free agency is dying down, this past weekend provided a lot of players with new homes. The Philadelphia Eagles were the big winners because after trading Kevin Kolb last week, they signed top cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, top interior lineman Cullen Jenkins, as well as cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. After coveting Asomugha and not signing him, the New York Jets made a small splash by signing former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress to a one-year deal. The Giants did talk with Burress, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement. And the Cincinnati Bengals were able to reach an agreement with starting running back Cedric Benson.

The NFL wasn’t the only league wheeling and dealing this weekend. In baseball, the July 31st trade deadline occurred. The Houston Astros unloaded their two top offensive stars to two National League East teams. The Philadelphia Phillies acquired rising star Hunter Pence, while the Atlanta Braves received the Major League stolen base leader Michael Bourn. The Cleveland Indians traded for the Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez for four top prospects, while the Boston Red Sox added starting pitching depth by adding Erik Bedard from the Seattle Mariners. The Pittsburgh Pirates added power outfielder Ryan Ludwick from the San Diego Padres and power hitting first baseman Derek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles to bolster their line up and push for the top spot in the National League Central. The Texas Rangers solidified their bullpen by added the top set up man on the market Mike Adams from the Padres.
