LOOK OUT FOR OUR NEW MULTIMEDIA WEB SITE! IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY OUR WATERCOOLER CHATS: NLCS, RAVENS QB, NBA ROOKIES

BASEBALL

The NLCS got off to a strong start last night.  Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels gave another strong post-season performance, and the Phillies continue to look great!  The Dodgers got up to a 2-0 lead, but in the bottomof the sixth inning, Philly turned on the juice.  First, Phillies slugger Chase Utley smacked a homer to tie the game, and then Philly’s other slugger, Pat Burrell launched another homer to give them a 3-2 lead. Obviously, the Philadelphia crowd went crazy!  It really feels like it’s their year to represent the National League in the World Series.  However, this series still has a long way to go, and Dodgers manager Joe Torre didn’t seem at all concerned after the game.  Philly has to keep coming strong if they want to make this dream a reality.

Football

A minor note that could turn out to be major.  The Baltimore Ravens, a team with a serious chance to make the Super Bowl because of their elite defense, named rookie Joe Flacco the Quarterback for the remainder of the season.  Flacco has played pretty decently in the first few games.  He’s not crushing opponents (as the Baltimore receivers are rather suspect and on almost nobody’s fantasy team), but they are off to a good start.  He’s made some rookie mistakes (a critical interception toward the end of the game against an undefeated Titans team), but head coach John Harbaugh thinks he can count on him.  Hey, Ben Roethlisberger won the Super Bowl as a 23-year old rookie.  There’s no reason this can’t happen again. Keep a close eye on the Baltimore Ravens.  They could really sneak up and do some damage in the playoffs.

NBA

And in the NBA, it’s only the pre-season, but it is our first glimpse at the rookie class in real action.  The most interesting item of note:  the Michael Beasly/Derek Rose debate is still in full effect.  Entering the draft, it was a toss-up who would go #1.  Derek Rose practically campaigned for it, saying “I only want to play in Chicago”.  Well, his passion did land him the #1 pick, but in the pre-season, it’s been all Michael Beasley.  Beasley looks terrific on the Miami Heat, while Rose is struggling a bit.  In his pre-season debut last night, he missed his first four shots, and only finished the game with 10 points.  Obviously, you can’t read too much into these pre-season stats, but don’t think Bulls management isn’t terrified right now that they made the wrong choice.

Baseball

The country is getting baseball fever as the League Championship games are set to begin.

First up, the underdog Tampa Bay Devil Rays take on the Boston Red Sox.  Dice-K, the Japanese ace, will start at pitcher for the Red Sox, while James Shields will start for the D-Rays.  Setting the starting pitcher of Game 1 is of paramount importance because it dictates the entire strategy of the series.  Coaches think about future possible pitching duels, which pitchers are better at home or on the road, and also whom they want readily available if it goes to Game 7.  It’s a very calculated decision.

Meanwhile, the LA Dodgers will take on the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow.  Two historic franchises vying for the World Series.  In the past 126 years, the Phillies have only won a total of 5 playoff series.  For those of you keeping score… that ain’t much.  Furthermore, both of these teams are HOT right now, and playing extremely well.  In fact, many experts are saying that the Phillies could surge to the World Series and even take down the mighty Red Sox (that is, if the Devil Rays don’t take care of the Bo-Sox first)

Football

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said earlier this season that he likes drawing as much attention as possible to the Cowboys organization.  He wants people talking about his team non-stop.  This includes signing troublesome players that he knows will attract heavy media attention; players like Adam “Pac Man” Jones, who faced myriad legal battles while a member of the Tennessee Titans.  Well… it looks like he’s at it again, as Pac Man reportedly got into a fight with one of his OWN security guards at a hotell.  Um, doesn’t attacking your own protector defeat the whole purpose of security.

Check out this story on the new lingerie football league. Yes, it’s true, this publicity stunt that aired on pay per view at the Super Bowl is now becoming a real league set to debut in 2009. I’m actually a little speechless on this one…just watch the video.

LOOK OUT FOR OUR NEW MULTIMEDIA WEB SITE! IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY OUR WATERCOOLER CHATS: DAILY UPDATE

It was a slow day in the sports world, but there’s always something out there:

NFL

First, lets take a quick poll.  There are only 2 undefeated teams left in the NFL.  The Tennessee Titans and the New York Giants.  Could either of these teams sweep the season?  Is the possibility of a perfect season upon us… again? (albeit lets just forget last year’s Super Bowl in that question).  Either way, which team do you think has the best chance of going undefeated?  The Titans have the league’s best defense, and the Giants seem impeccable.  They haven’t played a close game yet.  However, they play in the toughest, most competitive division in football:  the NFC East — home to the Cowboys, Eagles, and surging Redskins.  So, in a reader poll, who’s gonna slip-up first?

College Football

Finally, down in Texas, the start is on fire as the No 5 Texas Longhorns get ready for their annual showdown against the Oklahoma Sooners.  And this game has HUGE implications.  Texas looks amazing this year, with the improved play of their Quarterback, Colt McCoy.  And Oklahoma, well.. they’re #1.  And both these teams hate it when they’re NOT #1.  The rivalry fire is in its embered state right now, but by week’s end, it will be an inferno.

Basketball

Elsewhere, the Washington Wizards can’t seem to get any better.  They are returning next season with practically the same roster as the two previous seasons, but last night they got another kiss of bad luck.  Their all-star forward, Antwan Jamison, sprained his knee in a pre-season game against the Dallas Mavericks.  He is now out indefinitely.  The Wizards are an offensive team led by Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler.  But Jamison is the backbone.  Without him, they could seriously fall to the bottom of the standings.

Baseball

The Phillies have decided on their starting pitcher against the ruthless Dodgers.  They’re going with young Cole Hamels.  He gave an incredible performance against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1, and that really set the tone of the series.  Under his domination, it was almost as if the Phillies said, ‘Yeah, sorry Milwaukee, we’re winning this thing, and there’s nothing you can do about it’.

Baseball Playoffs

The Cinderella story dances on, as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays finished off the Chicago White Sox 6-2, and won their first playoff series EVER!  This run is completely unbelievable.  For those of you wondering how a young expansion team like the Devil Rays can be playing so well after being so terrible for almost a decade… here’s an answer.  Essentially, a new team like Tampa Bay has very little money to make offers to the stars of the league.  They have a lot of trouble bringing in established talent.  However, they get great draft picks.  And over a ten year span, all those #1 draft picks start to make a pretty nice team.  This year… they finally jelled, yielding one of the most exciting sports stories of the year.

Concurrently, the Boston Red Sox put the Los Angeles Angels to rest behind a brilliant performance by the Red Sox new ace pitcher, Jon Lester.  He held the Angels to four hits in 7 innings, but didn’t get the win because the Angels scored twice in the 8th.  However, the game ended with a clutch hit by the rookie, Jed Lowrie, which brought in a run, and gave the Red Sox the victory.

Now, we have an incredible American League showdown between the Devil Rays (the upstart magical team), and the Red Sox (the defending world champions).  Yes, you can say it, it’s the little guy vs. the big guy, and it’s gonna be wild.

Football

And over in the NFL, the Minnesota Vikings held off a pesky New Orleans Saints team.  Saints all-star Running Back (and boyfriend of Kim Kardashian of the “I don’t know why She’s famous fame”), Reggie Bush, had 2 punt returns for Touchdowns, but their running game couldn’t do much else.  Minnesota won the game with a game-closing 30-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell.  Minnesota 30, New Orleans 27.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Finally, an item of note from the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).  Kimbo Slice, the enigmatic powerhouse who terrorized and destroyed his opponents for the larger part of this year, and graced the cover of magazines with the billing ‘UNSTOPPABLE’ — well — his 15 minutes of fame ended in exactly 14 seconds.  Seth Petruzelli, a last minute replacement to fight Kimbo Slice in the MAIN EVENT, absolutely destroyed him in just a meager 14 seconds.  The ref had to stop the fight, and the myth that is Kimbo Slice (a guy who started out as a literal street fighter) was over.  But… it was a great story while it lasted.

Football

1) Bad news for the Buffalo Bills.  They came into Arizona as one of the three undefeated teams in the league, but they sure didn’t look like a team to be reckoned with.  For starters, their quarterback, Trent Edwards, was knocked out in the first quarter and carted off the field.  He was replaced by J.P. Losman, and the Bills just didn’t look the same.  With the exception of an 87 yard TD bomb to Lee Evans, the Bills turned into a Turnover machine, and were absolutely trounced by the Cardinals.  Arizona 41, Buffalo 17.

2) Over in Baltimore, the 4-0 Tennessee Titans came to town, and it was a battle of the top two defenses in the NFL.  Even Olympic hero and Baltimore native, Michael Phelps was on hand.  Baltimore’s defense had the edge early, intercepting 2 passes from Titans QB Kerry Collins.  But, in the end, the Titans came roaring back, and they took the lead at the end with a Collins touchdown pass to Tight End, Alge Crumpler.  The Titans remain undefeated at 5-0.  Tennessee 13, Baltimore 10.

3) And the only other undefeated team, the NY Giants hosted the Seattle Seahawks.  Listen — there is definitely something wrong with the Seahawks.  They are absolutely abysmal when having to travel to the east coast to play a 1:00 game.  It almost looked like a practice for the Giants, and Eli Manning is establishing himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.  He threw for 267 and two TDs, and just shredded the Seahawks defense.  NY Giants 44, Seattle 6.

4) Down in Texas… some awesome, then sloppy football from the Houston Texans.  Back-up QB Sage Rosenfels started for the ill Matt Schaub.  And boy did he look great through 3 quarters, throwing for 246 yards and a TD.  It looked like the Texans would win the ball game, but Sage Rosenfels completely fell apart in the final 2 minutes.  He had 2 critical fumbles, which the Colts converted to touchdowns, and the Texans shockingly lost the game at the end.  Indianapolis 31, Houston 27.

5) And what is happening with the Dolphins.  In their opening game, they looked like a JV football team.  But now, they look terrific.  They’re playing to their strengths, running trick plays almost every possession.  In their past two games, they’ve knocked off the Patriots in New England, and the Chargers in San Diego.  They are simply jelling.  Out of all the teams out there, the Dolphins are easily the most fun to watch.  For proof, just watch their Running Back, Ronnie Brown, line up at quarterback and their quarterback, Chad Pennington, line up at Wide Receiver.  You never know what Dolphins head coach, Tony Sparano, has up his sleeve.  If you can, go to a sports bar and watch this team next week.  Miami 17, San Diego 10.
Baseball

And in baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies knocked off the Milwaukee Brewers 3 games to 1.  This sets up an exciting National League Championship game between the Philadelphia and Los Angeles; two fan bases that passionately want to win a world series.  It’s gonna be an incredible match-up.

Baseball

Well, the first day of the MLB playoffs kicked off yesterday, and were nothing short of disappointing.

First things first — looks like Philly fans have a little luck on their side, as the Phillies held off the Brewers 3-1.  They did this behind a dominating performance from their starting pitcher, Cole Hamels.  He went 8 strong innings, and an amazing 9 strikeouts.  Hamels was so good, that the Brewers were relieved when the Phillies star closer, Brad Lidge came in.  ‘Phew — a break’, the Brewers thought, but the Brewers didn’t have enough, giving the Phillies (and the Philadelphia sports fans) a much needed win.

Up next, it was the Cubs v. the Dodgers.  Is this the year for the Cubs?  Is it finally time for Cubs fans to forgive Steve Bartman (the guy who interfered with their ’03 World Series run).  Well, the game got off to a good start for the Cubbies, as Mark DeRosa smashed a home-run to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.  And yeah, the fans went crazy.  But the new-look Dodgers are incredible this year, especially with the addition of former Yankees coach, Joe Torre, and former Red Sox slugger, Manny Ramirez.  Ramirez even had a home-run in the game, and Dodgers overpowered the Cubs 7-2.  So, basically, if the Cubs want this to be ‘their year’, they better try harder, because the Dodgers aren’t playing dead for them.

The Chicago White Sox, who won a one game playoff with the Minnesota Twins to advance to the ‘real’ playoffs, will take on the underdog story of the season:  The Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  The Rays have their eye on the prize, but don’t think Chicago fans wouldn’t love a White Sox/Cubs world series showdown — with White Sox fans thinking ‘Hey Cubs fans, you want a World Series… well you’re gonna have to go through the better Chicago team to get it.  Ha ha ha!!’.

LOOK OUT FOR OUR NEW MULTIMEDIA WEB SITE! IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY OUR WATERCOOLER CHATS:Kiffin fired, Williams Tough Week, Baseball Playoffs

Football

Well, it’s final, the Raiders have officially fired their coach, Lane Kiffin.  Lane was on the hot seat since Game 1, and there was a delay in his termination.  Many thought it all came down to the Raiders/Chargers game on Sunday.  Oakland got out to a 15-0 lead before blowing the game in the 2nd half, and falling 28-18.  And that pretty much did it for Kiffin, who was sent sailing by Raiders owner Al Davis.   Davis, notorious for being harsh, said, “I picked the wrong guy”.

And there’s more news about Dolphins Running Back, Ricky Williams. A few years ago, Ricky Williams literally ‘took the season off’ to relax, tour the country with Lenny Kravitz, and yep, smoke pot.  Hey, he said this.  Obviously strange behavior for the once Heisman Trophy Winner and premiere RB in the NFL, but… he did what he did, and supposedly he’s addicted to the drug.  Now, Ricky is back in the NFL, and is actively splitting carries with Ronnie Brown.  But the Dolphins had their bye week last weekend, and Ricky said it was “tough” for him to resist smoking pot.  It’s simply amusing that a statement like this can birth headlines across every major newspaper.

Baseball

And finally, baseball playoffs start today.  In the National League, it’s the rejuvenated Milwaukee Brewers taking on the Philadelphia Phillies, and then the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the ‘can-they-do-it’ Cubs.  But, the day kicks off with the defending World Champion, Boston Red Sox, taking on the Los Angeles Angels.  That’s a lot of baseball action for ya, and it’s gonna be absolutely terrific!
